Commander, Kostrad Infantry Battalion (Yonif) 432
This battalion is part of the Kostrad 3rd Airborne Infantry Brigade (Brigif Linud III), commanded in 1999 by LtCol Irwan Kusnadi, who was at the same time East Timor combat Sector A commander. It was from Makassar, South Sulawesi, and spent only a few weeks in East Timor in 1999. The brigade was formed in 1985 out of Kopassus personnel who had been with the counter-insurgency Group 3, but who had been shed from Kopassus after a reorganisation. It was often still commanded by a Kopassus officer (of whom Irwan Kusnadi was probably one).
Battalion 432 had been in East Timor several times before it was sent, together with Airborne Battalion 700 (see LtCol Lukito), to East Timor from Ambon upon the declaration of martial law on 7 September 1999. It was therefore in East Timor at the height of the destruction.
On 17 October 1999, Battalion 432 withdrew to Atambua, in West Timor near the border with East Timor. It was assigned border security duties (including joint patrols with Interfet), but also had to disarm militias among the refugees. However, Interfet accused the Indonesian district commander at Kefamenanu of allowing the battalion to permit the militia force Sakunar to launch incursions into East Timor with 'impunity'. Sakunar was led by Laurento 'Moko' Soares.
Battalion 432 personnel allegedly tortured eight individuals in the Belu district, near Atambua, on 29 November 1999.
