Kopassus commander, Group V

Pramono Edhie Wibowo assumed command of Kopassus Group V (anti-terrorist) in 1999. The group was also deployed in East Timor in that year - for example in Baucau, through a unit called Detachment 81 (D-81). It slipped into Dili on 5 September 1999, the day before Bishop Belo’s house was attacked. At present we have no details of human rights abuses committed by Pramono, or the group he led, in East Timor in 1999.[1]

Background

He is the son of the late LtGen (ret) Sarwo Edhie Wibowo, one of the 'red beret' troops who helped bring in the New Order under General Suharto in 1965/66. In 1998 he commanded Kopassus Group I, based in Serang, West Java.[2] He is regarded as a Prabowo ally. In May 1997 Kopassus Group 5 took part in a US-funded program called 'Balance Iron 97-6A' (through the Joint Combined Education and Training program, JCET). They received training in Special Reconnaisance/ Combat Patrolling Small Unit Tactics, 15 May-27 June 1997.[3]
